I believe teachers put marks on students, which can stay with them into their adulthood and influence what kind of marks they themselves want to put on society. The question that teachers should ask themselves is what kind of mark they want to leave on their students when they leave their classroom and is that a mark they would want students leaving on others? For me, the kind of mark I want to put on students is a mark of belief, understanding, and acceptance. When I teach a curriculum I want to also encourage my students to believe in their potential, believe in their understanding and believe it can be useful and important as they find their place in society. I want encourage my students to engage in deep understanding of the topics I cover, how it connects to society and how it connects to them as an individual. Lastly, I want to encourage my students to be able to evaluate and accept differences, originality and to be less afraid of differences. I strive to create a classroom where creativity and originality is encouraged and accepted through the use of much discussion, collaboration and guidance. When it comes to my students’ learning I do not want to be on a stage with the spotlight and my students as my audience. Rather, I want to be amongst my students in their learning, easily assessable and approachable with the spotlight on them.
