Letter to my Grade 9 self

Dear Grade 9 self,

Here are a couple of things I wished you would have known in the transition from junior high to high school. First, the people you view as really cool and desperately want approval from should not have that much power in your life. Be kind to them, but you will see in the future that they were not worth so much of your attention. Next, value and respect how you feel. If something feels wrong or off, pay attention to that, don’t dismiss it and try to convince yourself you should feel otherwise.  Next, develop a better work ethic or else you are going to get demolished in first Year University if you don’t listen to me. Here’s a helpful tip, you are super competitive, so try and find someone to bet that you cannot do better then them in a test. Trust me, you will never study more in your life if it means getting to beat that annoying person that sits in the front row who thinks they walk on water. I’m sure some people would tell you that’s not healthy and their probably right. But…it works so I think for high school it’s okay 🙂

Elisabeth, be patient with yourself as being a student is something you can learn and grow in. I think you already realized this but being a student does not come naturally to you but that is not an indicator you should not go to post secondary. You will get disappointing marks and you will take those as personal attacks but try and see them as humbling opportunities to learn and grow.

You’re doing great, keep it up!

-Elisabeth in the future

P.S. Get rid of your purple pants.
